An ever-growing group of hundred women, currently receive in-depth instruction from expert artisans in the field. They also study modules dealing with the use of technology, business acumen, and starting new ventures. The benefit is twofold: ancient techniques and skills are now revived, rejuvenated by the joy and ambition of those who have finally been empowered.
Women of all communities can now create their art safely, transforming not just their own lives but the lives of those around them.
Chanakya’s women-only facility, with flexible timings, again the first of its kind in India, gives these women autonomy over their craft and their lives. After the curriculum is complete, the students are also offered a choice between entrepreneurship and employment.
This beautiful alliance has enabled women’s creativity, energy, enthusiasm and confidence to blossom. They can create their own change both at work and at home, transforming this opportunity into true progress and freedom.
Workshops are conducted, twice a month, through sessions with usually groups of 4 or 5 students – presentations, Q&A sessions as well as strategic group discussions and small assignments, help the women work together as a team which encourages trust and confidence.
These subjects together - history of art, through semiotics, symbols and forms, embroidery motifs and what they mean to certain cultures and how this is a pattern of identification and community building.
Day trips and excursions to the various museums around the area, are a treat for the students as they get a more tactile representation of the arts
through this experience. This helps the subject become more experiential rather than it being just theory.
A module on Creative Entrepreneurship, is a very important aspect of the curriculum and much appreciated by the women.
Teaching them some aspects of time management, client relationships, team work, and timely deliverables helps their confidence and empowers them with the tools they need to create and be proud of their work. Earning an extra income for their family, elevates their status in their own home and community and gives them the respect that they deserve.
